HRM urges residents to monitor forecasts,

be prepared for hurricane season

Friday, September 7, 2012 (Halifax, NS) - HRM’s Emergency Management Office (EMO) is reminding residents to take appropriate precautions for personal safety and property protection in the event of severe weather conditions this fall.

"Although the possibility of a hurricane impacting Eastern Canada is unknown at this time, residents should take this opportunity to review and replenish their family emergency kits,” said Barry Manuel, EMO Coordinator.

Residents should be prepared for emergencies year round with a three-day supply of water, food, clothing, first aid supplies, batteries, flashlights, and blankets. These should be in a bag or container that is easy to transport in the event of an evacuation. Residents can find tips to follow prior to, during and after an emergency, including hurricanes, at www.halifax.ca/emo.

“As we continue to monitor hurricane tracks and other severe weather systems that may impact the region over the coming weeks, we urge residents be prepared for storm conditions by securing their property and reviewing their household emergency plan with their families,” said Manuel.

The EMO community - which includes key personnel from Fire and Emergency, Regional Police, RCMP, Metro Transit, HRM Transportation and Public Works, and Halifax Water, along with representatives from EMO Nova Scotia, Public Safety Canada, NS Department of Community Services, Nova Scotia Power, EHS, and Red Cross – are well-connected and ready to help the region through any emergency situation.

HRM residents will be regularly updated on the possibility of severe weather conditions as new information is available. For more information on emergency and hurricane preparedness, including household emergency checklists, visit www.halifax.ca/emo. For non-emergency inquiries, HRM citizens should call 490-4000 or follow @hfxgov on Twitter.
