Province Sets Up Assessment Info Line

(Tuesday, June 6/2000)- Beginning this week, the Province of Nova Scotia will be mailing out approximately 40,000 notices to homeowners in the Halifax Regional Municipality whose assessments will be increased by 3% or more in the 2001 Final Assessment Roll.

The purpose of these preliminary notices is to give property owners sufficient time to contact the provincial Assessment Department regarding their assessment, prior to the final notices being sent out at the beginning of the year 2001. To service the anticipated response, the Province has set up a Customer Information Line at (902) 424-5225.

Only those property owners with an increase of 3% or greater will receive the preliminary notice. However, preliminary values have been set for all properties on the 2000 roll. Property owners who do not receive a notice can obtain their preliminary values by calling the Customer Information Line (902- 424-5225) as well.

The Provincial Assessment Department has indicatedthatthe majority of increases were placed on the "executive-style" homes in the following areas: Shore Drive, Bedford; Keystone Village, Dartmouth; the south and west ends of Halifax; and waterfrontage homes with an assessed value exceeding $ 100,000.

Should media outlets receive public inquiries regarding these preliminary notices, they are asked to refer callers to the Provincial Customer Information Line at (902) 424-5225.

Thanking you in advance for your cooperation.
