Community Builds Emergency Helicopter Pad

(Wednesday, June 7/2000)-- Community groups and volunteers got together and partnered with their local Councillor and the Halifax Regional Municipality to enhance health and safety service in the Porter's Lake area.

Councillor Keith Colwell (District 3-Preston/Porter's Lake) said he is overwhelmed by the community response to a call to construct a helicopter landing pad in the area, which will allow the province's Air Ambulance Service to respond to calls in that district.

Councillor Colwell said the entire project was "a community affair".

Local landowner Bill McFarlane, of West Porter's Lake Road, made a site available on his property for the landing pad; the Chezzetcook and District Lion's Club provided funding to purchase the safety cones to outline the landing pad; HRM provided lighting to enable the pad to be used after dark; and local volunteer Davis Edward, of Conrod's Settlement, donated his time and effort.

"This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when the community gets together and works with the municipality to accomplish a local goal. As a result, this area will now have access to emergency health air service, " Councillor Colwell said.

The helicopter landing pad will be officially opened during a ceremony on Friday, June 9th. The media is invited to attend.
