Mayor's Clean-Up Campaign a Huge Success

(Tuesday, July 18,2000)-- Close to 50 individuals, groups, organizations and schools responded to Mayor Walter Fitzgerald's first annual "Company's Coming...Let's Clean-up" anti-litter campaign throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Mayor Fitzgerald today issued a public "Thank You" to all HRM staff involved and those who participated in the many clean-up campaigns that were organized in various parts of HRM throughout the months of May and June*. Also, he thanked the Clorox Company of Canada for its contribution of plastic bags for the clean-ups.

"Thanks to the efforts of these individuals and groups, our region is neat and presentable for the huge influx of tourists expected to visit us this summer. This effort shows the tremendous pride that the citizens of the Halifax Regional Municipality have in their community. This pride, coupled with our friendliness and natural beauty of the land, make us one of the top tourist destinations in North America," he said.

Mayor Fitzgerald launched the campaign this Spring in anticipation of the large number of national and international events being held in the Halifax Region this summer, particularly the Tall Ships 2000.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the country and around the world are expected to participate in, and/or witness, these many grand events. With the eyes of the world upon us, Mayor Fitzgerald said "We want to be ready."

The Mayor declaredthe months of May and June as a region-wide " clean-up months" and business organizations, community groups and individuals in every District were encouraged to organize and participate in a clean-up campaign in their area.
