Reported Roof Collapse at Maitland Street Building

(Tuesday, February 6/2001)-- Halifax Regional Municipality's Building Inspection Service has issued an order to the owners of a building at 2277 Maitland Street in Halifax to secure and restrict access to the structure until necessary repairs have been carried out.

A report of a roof collapse at that site was called into Halifax Regional Police this morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. and officers were dispatched to close off the area to traffic and pedestrians. The Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service also responded and electrical power was cut to the building, which was a former department store fronting on Gottingen Street.

The Building Inspection Order was issued under provisions of the Building Code Act. Owners of the structure are required to:

1) secure/restrict access to the building

2) retain the services of a professional engineer to assess damage to the structure and supervise any remedial work required

3) the building cannot be re-occupied until necessary remedial work is carried out and certified.
