HRM Parks To Re-Open as Threat of Fire Hazard is Reduced

(Thursday, August 16, 2001)- Halifax Regional Municipality will lift the ban imposed late last week on entry to its parks and wooded areas , effective Friday, August 17, 2001 at 7:00 a.m.

The threat posed by fire hazard conditions, which led the municipality to close its parks on August 10th, has been reduced significantly due to the 40 mm. of rain which has fallen along the coastline over the past five days. The forecast also calls for more precipitation over the weekend.

Among the more popular municipal parks which are scheduled to re-open Friday morning include:

Point Pleasant Park (Halifax)

Sir Sanford Fleming Park (The Dingle)

Hemlock Ravine Park (Rockingham)

Shubie Park/Lake Charles Trail System (Dartmouth)

Admiral's Cove Park (Bedford)

Albro Lake/Spectacle Lake Trail System (Dartmouth)

Sandy Lake/Jack's Lake (Bedford)

Western Common Watershed Lands (Prospect Road)

Mainland Commons (Clayton Park)

The ban on open fires in fire/BBQ pits will continue to remain in place and the public is requested to use extreme caution with respect to the lighting of matches or cigarettes in wooded areas. HRM staff will continue to monitor the conditions of its parks daily ,and should conditions change for the worse, the ban will be put into place once again.

HRM wishes to thank citizens for their tremendous cooperation during the ban in helping to protect the public and our parklands.

Meanwhile, not all areas throughout Nova Scotia have been fortunate enough to have received the same amount of rainfall as the coast, so many forests and wooded areas remain extremely dry. As a result, the N.S. Department of Natural Resources provincial ban on entry into wooded and forested areas remains in effect.
