Councillor Pays Tribute to Long-Time Candidate

(Wednesday, December 5/2001)-- District 12 Councillor Dawn Sloane today extended condolences to the family of long-time political candidate Arthur Canning, who died early today.

Councillor Sloane said Mr. Canning, who ran unsuccessfully as an independent candidate in various federal, provincial and municipal elections over the years, will be fondly remembered in his Herring Cove Road neighbourhood as a life-long student of politics and a good, community-minded citizen.

Councillor Sloane said Mr. Canning was one of the candidates who ran against her in the October 2000 municipal election.

" He was often the first to support an underdog or a lost cause, and always the one to be gracious, whatever the outcome. He will certainly be missed, " she said.
