Taxi License Draw Set for Tomorrow
(Wednesday, July 10/2002)-- A taxi license lottery will be held tomorrow to determine the order of name placement on a waiting list for licenses as they become available.
To be eligible for placement on the list, taxi drivers must meet the following criteria:
(a) must hold a current Halifax Zone taxi driver license; and (b) must not hold a taxi owner license in their own name or in the name of a corporation of which the taxi driver is a share holder
An Eligibility List was developed based on HRM records, and names have been placed in the year in which the driver first received a taxi driver license ( including conditional and temporary licenses.) There is no significance to the order in which names appear within the yearly categories.
A draw will be made for each year in the following order: 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and January 1 - March 26, 2002; as well as any year prior to 1991, the year 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994. The first name drawn from the 1995 lot will be assigned the first position on the waiting list; the second name drawn will be the second name added and so on until there are no further names of taxi drivers licensed in 1995. This procedure will be repeated for the remaining years until all names have been drawn and assigned a position on the list.
Available taxi owner licenses will be offered to eligible drivers in the order that their names appear on the waiting list. For example, the first person on the waiting list will be offered the opportunity to apply for the first available license and so on until all available owner licenses have been issued. If a driver does not exercise the option to obtain an owner license, their name will be moved to the bottom of the list and the license will be offered to the next eligible driver on the waiting list.
When: Thursday, July 11, 2002
Where: Bloomfield Centre, 2786 Agricola Street, Halifax
Time: 1 p.m.
