Heavy Rainfall Results in Siltation into Russell Lake

(Thursday, November 14/2002)--The heavy rains over the last 48 hours have overloaded some sections of HRM's storm sewer system.

Increased sediment concentrations have been discovered in Russell Lake, in Dartmouth. The source of the sediment is currently under investigation.

Silt booms were installed in Russell Lake by the developer of Evergreen Subdivision as an Environmental Protection Measure during the development phases of the subdivision. The booms are privately-owned, and have in the past prevented sediment during heavy rains from entering the main body of Russell Lake.

Several breaches in the booms were reported this morning. The Nova Scotia Department of the Environment has been notified , and the booms will be repaired by the developer.
