New Book Chronicles 160 Years of Leadership in Halifax Region
(Wednesday, December 11/2002) -A new book chronicling more than 160 years of history of the Halifax Region through the lives of the mayors and wardens of the former cities, town and county was unveiled today.
Mayor Peter Kelly and author H. Millard Wright officially launched the book, entitled "One Region, Many Leaders", during a ceremony at Halifax Hall today. Many of the former mayors and wardens were on hand for the launch.
"One Region, Many Leaders" touches on the lives of some of the people who have made this region the strongest and most vibrant in the Atlantic Provinces," said Mayor Kelly. "I hope both residents of HRM and visitors to our region will enjoy reading about the fascinating men and women who served as mayors and wardens in our great community."
The book is divided into chapters that reflect the pre-amalgamation cities of Halifax and Dartmouth, the Town of Bedford and the Municipality of the County of Halifax. Each former municipal unit is covered from its incorporation until 1996, when they were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Municipality.
"Researching and writing One Region, Many Leaders was both a challenge and a labour of love," said author Millard Wright. "It gave me a great deal of satisfaction to locate 99 pictures of the 110 chief administrators who served their municipalities and to find the biographical background of them all."
