Remember to Take Advantage of Metro Transit's
Free Designated Driver Service on New Year's Eve

(For Release December 22 - 31, 2003) - Metro Transit wishes to remind everyone who is planning to go out for a New Year's Eve celebration, that its 18th Annual Free New Year's Eve Designated Driver Program will continue again this year, providing you with a safe, affordable and convenient way home. This free extended bus service operates on New Year's Eve between 8:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. This includes Access-A-Bus service for registered users also. The Halifax/Dartmouth Harbour Ferry will also provide free service on New Year's Eve from 8:30 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. (last departure from Halifax 1:45 a.m.), operating on a half hour frequency.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for New Year's Eve party goers to enjoy themselves and not have to worry about transportation. Staff of the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation want to remind their customers and the public that drinking and driving do not mix," said Jane Sheppard, NSLC Advertising Coordinator.

This program was initially introduced in 1985 to discourage drinking and driving, and it is possible to continue providing this service each year thanks to our sponsors, Presenting Sponsor Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and Corporate Sponsors Oland Breweries, Q104, Nova Scotia Safety Council, Metro Transit and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 508 and The Herald. Thanks to Metro Transit's Bus and Access-A-Bus Operators, the Ferry Crew, maintenance staff and other employees who will be working on New Year's Eve to ensure that others arrive home safely!

"As metro area's public transportation system, we believe that we are making a valuable and worthwhile contribution to the community in discouraging people from drinking and driving, by promoting the use of the bus and ferry service at no charge for this evening," said Brian Taylor, General Manager, Metro Transit.
