Meeting Called to Update Residents on Grain Elevator Operations

(Thursday, January 22, 2004)-- Councillor Sue Uteck said today there will be a neighborhood community meeting next week in District 13 to update local residents on activities undertaken by Halifax Grain Elevators Limited and the Halifax Port Authority regarding operations at the south end grain elevator.

The grain elevator was the scene last summer of an explosion and fire that forced the evacuation of close to 400 residents from the surrounding neighborhoods.

A subsequent investigation ruled that "mechanical heat from friction" was the most probable cause of the explosion and fire.

The report, prepared by investigators from the HRM Fire Service; the provincial Fire Marshall's Office; Human Resource Development Canada (Labour division) and engineering consultants, stated that "most consensus reports (during the investigation) dwelled on the lack of cleaning and maintenance carried out throughout the complex."

Councillor Uteck said all are welcome to attend next Thursday's meeting.

When: Thursday, January 29, 2004

Time: 7-9 p.m.

Where: Halifax Hall, City Hall, 1841 Argyle Street, Halifax
