Point Pleasant Design Competition to be Launched

(Wednesday, May 25/2005)-- Media representatives are invited to attend the launch of "Regenerate, Restore, Renew"--- the Point Pleasant Park International Design Competition, sponsored by the Halifax Regional Municipality and Southwest Properties Ltd.

Date: Friday, May 27, 2005
Time: 11 a.m.
Place: Lower parking lot, Point Pleasant Park (Shakespeare by the Sea if wet)

The following extract from the design brief explains why a design competition has been chosen as the way to prepare a master plan for the park, and what the winning entry might include:

Point Pleasant Park is for people, and the design competition is about people. So what is there to design?
•• There is design in choreographing visitors' experiences as they explore forest, shoreline and history in changing weather, light and seasons.
•• There is design in giving the people back a wonderful park in one generation rather than three generations
•• There is design in creating places within places, giving character to places, taking advantage of borrowed landscapes and making 185 acres feel like 1,500 acres.
•• There is design in buffering undesirable view planes and opening up beautiful ones.
•• There is design in displaying the ecological and historical aspects of Point Pleasant

Copies of the design brief will be available and access to the competition website will be launched during this event.

This competition will provide a master plan for all aspects of the renewal of the park following the September 2003 hurricane and subsequent clean-up. The competition brief to competitors is based on the results of the January 2005 public participation process and the advice of experts in the fields of ecology, archaeology, landscape architecture, recreation planning, history, forestry and others.
