Mayor to welcome Youth to Planning Session for
First-ever HRM Youth Conference

(Thursday, May 4, 2006) - Mayor Peter Kelly will welcome between 40-60 youth to a planning session of the Municipality’s first-ever HRM Youth Conference this Friday. The one-day conference - planned by youth, for youth - is set to take place in September 2006 and will be made possible through the support of the Halifax Regional Municipality and HRM youth service providers.

The Conference comes as a result of the Department of Community, Culture and Economic Development’s consultations with over 6,100 HRM youth since 2004. It will showcase ways for young people in HRM to get even more involved in their communities. Included in the Conference will be Youth Action Teams on issues youth are passionate about: youth-driven arts and culture, recreation (not just sports), and formal governance roles in HRM.

“The youth of Halifax Regional Municipality have many talents and great enthusiasm which they generously contribute to shaping our community,” says Mayor Kelly. “We are committed to enabling our young people to express themselves and fully participate in the ‘big ideas’ and decisions which will sustain and build the future we share.”

Mayor Kelly will welcome the youth:

When: Friday, May 5, 2006

Time: 10:00 am

Where: Findlay Community Centre, 26 Elliot Street, Dartmouth

There will be two youth representatives available to speak about their involvement in the Youth Conference.
