SULLIVAN’S POND/LAKE BANOOK MASTER PLAN

(Tuesday, April 3/07)--Halifax Regional Municipality and Ekistics Planning & Design, of Dartmouth, will hold a public workshop on Wednesday to gather public feedback regarding proposed improvements to municipally-owned lands surrounding Lake Banook and Sullivan’s Pond.

Also participating in the workshop will be the Shubenacadie Canal Commission, Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission, Sport Nova Scotia and other associated user groups.

Lake Banook and Sullivan’s Pond are part of the historic Shubenacadie Canal Lakes Waterway and have significant cultural and heritage values. Lake Banook has long been recognized as a world class paddling basin and will host the 2008 National and 2009 World Canoe Championships.

Topics to be discussed at the workshop will range from neighbourhood issues to capital works to improve public use and much-needed investment to enhance paddling facilities.

Councillor Gloria McCluskey said “I am really excited that we are looking to improve this important and beautiful area of HRM. The upcoming paddling championships will mean that we will be showcasing our municipality to the world. The championships will be televised and twice as many countries will be participating as did in 1999. More importantly the improvements will need to be meaningful to our residents, who use these lakes everyday for sport, recreation, and transportation ,as well as those who live in the surrounding neighbourhood. We are hopeful that the public will take this opportunity to share their ideas regarding Sullivan’s Pond and Lake Banook, because these lakes and public lands play an important role in the quality of life of Dartmouth and contribute to the overall success of HRM”.
