Tree Planting at Oxford School to Mark Arbor Day

(Tuesday, June 22, 2010) – With the help of Oxford School students, Mayor Peter Kelly and District 14 Councillor Jennifer Watts, will do their part for Arbor Day by planting trees at the school on Wednesday, June 23.

HRM, through its Urban Forestry Division, donates two trees each year at this time to be planted on a school property. This year, Oxford School will add the trees to their outdoor space. The tree planting will take place at 11 a.m. on the school grounds located at 6364 North Street in Halifax.

Arbor Day was founded by Julius Sterling Morton and began 138 years ago in Nebraska. It is estimated that one million trees were planted on that inaugural occasion. Arbor Day continues today to highlight the vital benefits of trees.
