Work begins on Canada Games Speed Skating Oval

(Wednesday, September 8, 2010) - Dexter Construction has been awarded the contract to prepare the North Common for the installation of the Canada Games Long Track Speed Skating Oval. Perimeter fencing has been installed and the field levelling work with the heavy machinery is scheduled to begin tomorrow - Thursday, September 9, 2010.

Beginning in December 2010 the public will have access to this facility to experience ‘big ice’ - before the athletes do. The ice surface of the oval is big - equivalent to three NHL hockey rinks. HRM is programming a host of free public recreation programs, from Learn to Skate programs to winter festivals and themed events for the community to enjoy before the athletes arrive. The long track speed skating competition in February will be a free event for spectators.

Important Dates (tentative):
December 2010 - Facility open to the public
January 15-16, 2011 - Long track speed skating test event
February 11-27, 2011 - Canada Games - Long Track Speed Skating
Summer 2011 - Reinstatement of playing fields
Fall 2011 - Fields ready for play
