HRM Urges Caution: Winter Works Crews Prepare for Back-to-Back Snowfall Tonight and Tomorrow

(February 1, 2011) - With 10 cm of snow expected this evening and a heavy snowfall on the way tomorrow (Feb. 2), HRM’s Municipal Operations Winter Works crews are once again preparing so that they can have the workers and equipment in place to stay on top on the work ahead.

Crews are out now spreading salt and plowing to make for safer road conditions, however, with another storm dropping potentially another 20 to 45 cm of snow, road conditions may be difficult.

The latest forecast calls for approximately 5 to 10 cm tonight. Another system is heading HRM’s way tomorrow, with snow at times heavy and local blowing snow beginning some time around midday Wednesday.

Once the initial system stops, efforts will be made first on the P1 roads to clear for the morning rush hour. P2 streets will only be given a cut through pass to facilitate access to local roads. Crews will move to do the main push back work after the second part of the storm has passed.

Sidewalk operations will begin tonight on the P1 (arterial) and P2 (transit) sidewalks , however it is unlikely they will be finished before the second part of the storm begins.

Residents are asked to ensure vehicles are not left on the street to obstruct snow removal operations.

In emergency situations, please call 911 and the dispatchers there will contact Municipal Operations if they require immediate plowing.
