Phase II of Nathan Green Square Revitalization Project Set to Begin

(February 28, 2011) The first phase of the Nathan Green Square Revitalization Project is now complete and HRM and WDCL are moving into Phase II today (Feb. 28).

Phase II involves removing the existing underground oil tank located outside the north entrance/exit to the terminal building and installing a natural gas line connection to the building.

Ferry passenger access will be affected during this phase as the north entrance to the terminal building will close today (Feb. 28) through to and including March 5. This brief disruption will allow time for a complete excavation of the tank, infilling the space, and placing temporary cover over the area until the planned boardwalk extension between the terminal building and Historic Properties is complete.

There will be rolling closures throughout the week of the other entrance/exits as required while Heritage Gas installs the gas feed line near the perimeter of the building. These closures will be identified by staff on-site and will be controlled through the aid of onsite security personnel and other HRM staff.

Phase I included replacing and reinforcing the cement and steel structure supporting the ferry terminal building, Nathan Green Square and the boardwalk area.

HRM and the WDCL are each contributing $200,000 towards the Nathan Green Square Revitalization Project which is set to be completed by March 31, 2011. The improvements include a continuation of the timber boardwalk, new seating, enhanced landscape which will add year-round interest, improved lighting, and water views, as well as better access between this public area and Historic Properties.
