Overnight parking ban will be enforced 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30

Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – Please be advised that the overnight winter parking ban will be enforced from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, while municipal operations works to clear the streets and sidewalks of the snow and ice.

Vehicles must be off HRM streets during these hours to accommodate effective clearing operations. Residents should also be aware that under section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, tickets can be issued and vehicles can be towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing.

Current forecasts are calling for periods of snow Sunday evening with a transition to freezing rain and rain near midnight. Air temperatures will drop through the morning hours and into the afternoon, flurries are expected during this time.

The overnight parking ban will allow crews to get snow and slush pushed back to the curb so that catch basins can be exposed and snow banks cleared back. A cold spell is forecasted over the next couple of days therefore the overnight clean-up will be very important prior to expected freezing temperatures.

Municipal Operations will mobilize crews through the evening and will work at keeping priority street and sidewalk routes clear for the morning commute. Motorists can expect driving conditions to deteriorate during the evening and overnight hours. Keeping routes free of ice will be a challenge during the transition to rain. Ice and localized flooding can be expected. Please drive with caution.

It is expected that by the morning commute main routes will be plowed open however residential streets and sidewalks may remain covered with snow and or slush. Please allow yourself extra time in reaching your destination tonight and tomorrow morning.

The overnight winter parking ban is in effect from now until March 31, 2014, however, it will only be enforced during declared snow and ice events, such as today's storm.

The easiest way to be prepared is to sign up for CityWatch notifications of parking bans. Fill out a registration form at www.halifax.ca/snow/parkingban, email contacthrm@halifax.ca or call 311. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message when the ban is in effect and again when it is lifted. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.
