Visitors to Point Pleasant Park Notified of Low Level Fly Past May 2, 2010

(Friday, April 30, 2010) – In honour of the ceremony for the Battle of the Atlantic, the Canadian Forces will fly a long range patrol aircraft directly over the Sailor’s Memorial in Point Pleasant Park at an altitude of 500 feet above the highest obstacle Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 10:59 a.m..

The annual ceremony is held to honour the Veterans of the Battle of the Atlantic: the longest running battle of World War II. The efforts were critical to protecting the safety of the Atlantic Supply route but came at a high cost. One in ten lost their lives during this battle - a higher percentage than any other branch of the military.

HRM Council was pleased to grant permission for the ceremonial fly-past. The Mayor, on behalf of all HRM Council, salutes the Merchant Mariners, the Royal Canadian Navy and all others who helped turn the tide of the Second World War during the Battle of the Atlantic, through what were extremely precarious conditions in both the sea and the air.
