Mayor Kelly and Councillor Streatch distribute grants worth $150,000

(Wednesday July 13, 2011) Halifax – Numerous volunteer projects along the Eastern Shore and in the Musquodoboit Valley will be able to proceed, thanks to the distribution Wednesday of almost $150,000 in community grants and other funding by the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Mayor Peter Kelly, Councillor Steve Streatch and HRM Chief Administrative Officer Richard Butts spent the day visiting a dozen communities in District 1. They discussed local issues with residents and Councillor Streatch presented cheques to various groups and organizations.

Mayor Kelly described the financial support as an important investment in the creation of healthy, liveable communities. “Volunteers work tirelessly throughout HRM to provide programs and facilities to benefit their areas,” the mayor said. “These grants represent extra support for them, to help maintain and improve existing activities and encourage new ones.”

Councillor Streatch paid tribute to the hard work done by community groups and said the funding was a way for elected officials to show their appreciation and give back to everyone involved.

The councillor also welcomed the involvement of the CAO in Wednesday’s tour of the area. “It is significant that Mr. Butts is accompanying us,” he said. “This is his first district tour as CAO and I am honoured to have him with us. It shows how significant and important the rural areas are.”

During their visit to District 1, the three men also met with local fire chiefs to learn more about the challenges their departments face.
