New Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre grand opening

Saturday, November 24, 2012 (Halifax, NS) – Councillor Brad Johns, on behalf of Mayor Mike Savage, today officially opened the new $6.5 million Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre.

“Opening this facility 14 months after construction began is symbolic of this community’s spirit, pride and the tireless efforts of many citizens,” said Councillor Johns. “Area residents will be pleased with several new onsite amenities that will ensure the centre once again becomes a gathering place for people of all ages in this community.”

The new facility, to be shared with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Services, includes a daycare, dance studio, dedicated youth and senior program space, as well as a large multi-purpose room with a full kitchen.

The centre will not only serve the recreational needs of the local community but is designed to target LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver standards. Three large cisterns under the parking lot will store rainwater collected from the roof to be used primarily for the sprinkler system.

“Community members have been looking forward to the grand opening of the new centre since September 24, 2009,” said Mannie Lewis, Chair of the Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre Board. “Our dedicated team of volunteers has worked hard in cooperation with HRM, the contractors and the community and we are proud of our new building and what we have accomplished over the past three years.”

The Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre was built to replace the previous facility destroyed by fire in 2009. It is operated as a non-profit facility guided by a volunteer board of directors.
