Canadian Tire to sponsor Emera Oval and HRM recreation programming

Monday, Nov. 5, 2012 (Halifax, NS) – Regional Council unanimously approved a sponsorship agreement between HRM and Canadian Tire/Canadian Tire Jumpstart last week. The three-year sponsorship agreement provides $270,000 towards recreation programming to assist financially disadvantaged children and youth gain access to recreation programming at the Emera Oval and throughout HRM.

“Every child should have the opportunity to play and recreate in a safe environment,” said Mayor Peter Kelly. “This funding opens the door so that even more children can take part in recreation throughout HRM.”

Canadian Tire will provide sponsorship funding to help HRM operate an “I Love to Skate” program at the Emera Oval along with an annual coupon program for helmets and skates for children and youth of need throughout the municipality. For access to recreation programs across the municipality, the Jumpstart/RecKids Program is designed to provide assistance to those who, due to lack of funds, would otherwise be unable to participate in sport, art, cultural and recreation activities.

“Our goal at Canadian Tire Jumpstart is to get children all across the country involved in sports and recreation and to give them a chance to fulfill their dreams,” said Charles Woodford, Regional Manager, Canadian Tire Jumpstart. “This partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart and HRM will give kids in the community an opportunity to participate in sport and recreational activities.”

Last year, the Emera Oval had over 130,000 people enjoy the winter skating season.  The oval plans to open in mid-December, 2012.
