Council approves Solar City pilot program
Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 (Halifax, NS) – Halifax Regional Council today approved the start of the $8.1 million Solar City pilot program.
Mayor Mike Savage recognized the significance of introducing this sophisticated renewable energy project in HRM, what it means for residents, the environment, the economy, and the influence it will carry in the consideration of future energy projects.
“The endorsement of Solar City, which drew profound public support, demonstrates Council’s commitment to sustainability and taking a leadership role when it comes to unique approaches to energy conservation in the region,” said Mayor Mike Savage. “The start of this program takes us a step closer to identifying viable cleaner energy sources and more efficient, innovative ways to use energy.”
In the first year, the project will see about 1,000 residents heating their hot water with solar energy. To make solar energy affordable, Solar City will use an innovative financing mechanism, similar to a local improvement charge, which will facilitate the adoption of solar hot water systems that are made right here in Nova Scotia.
The Province of Nova Scotia was key in initiating the Solar City program by providing legislative amendments, project development support, and a $1.25 million contribution to fund the Efficiency NS rebates.
HRM will begin ramping up the program over the next four to six weeks and expects to hold open house sessions in January and February which will explain the details of the program. Information will also be posted on www.halifax.ca/solarcity.
