Public art installation begins in Sir Sandford Fleming Park

Wednesday, July 25, 2012 (Halifax, NS) – Sundials will soon begin popping up throughout Sir Sandford Fleming Park as part of a unique new artwork by Halifax artist David Clark. The project, involving 24 sundials and your smart phone, is entitled Meantime In Greenwich and is about Sir Sandford Fleming’s contribution to standardized time.  The installation began on Monday.

An official unveiling of the artwork will take place on Monday, Aug. 6 during the 5th Annual Dingle Natal Day Party.  Park visitors will be invited to find the sundials installed through the sprawling park surrounding the Memorial (Dingle) Tower, a site that had once been Fleming’s summer home. Using a smart phone with augmented reality marker-based tracking technology, they will also be able to see 3D objects and video elements. Each sundial will trigger a story of a fragment of history that relates to the theme of time and technology and Sir Sandford Fleming.

This project is supported by HRM’s Culture division.  For more information, visit www.halifax.ca/culture.
