Neighbours unite to paint design at Black Street and Northwood Terrace intersection

Friday, July 13, 2012 (Halifax, NS) - On Saturday, July 14 at 11 a.m., neighbours will come together to transform the intersection at Black Street and Northwood Terrace by painting a large community-created design on the street as part of an HRM pilot project, co-sponsored by the 4Cs Foundation. A group of community members, operating under the name of Placemaking Halifax, spearheaded this project in collaboration with HRM. It is the first municipally-supported, community-driven street painting project in Canada.

HRM’s pilot Placemaking program provides neighbourhoods with the opportunity to organize and propose community art projects on city property that activate shared public spaces, give a sense of place and build community spirit. This program was inspired by Portland, Oregon’s City Repair model (

All are invited to attend this free event, coinciding with Northwood's 50th anniversary. Residents can participate in painting the street, and enjoy live music, a facilitated drum circle (, carnival games, face painting, food vendors, kids' activities, story time, and an evening of dancing until 11 p.m. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, July 15.

This pilot project will enable HRM to create a clear and accessible application process for other neighbourhoods to initiate Placemaking projects in their communities.

For more information:

Residents are advised that Black Street from Gottingen Street to Fuller Terrace, and Northwood Terrace from North Street to Bloomfield Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 8 a.m. – 11p.m.
