Councillor Wants to Attract Call Centre Operation to Spryfield

(Friday, February 12/99)-- Councillor Stephen Adams is working with local economic development agencies in an attempt to attract a national or international call centre operation to the Spryfield area of District 18 (Spryfield/Herring Cove).

Councillor Adams says he has been consulting with various segments of the Spryfield community regarding the prospect and he has already held preliminary discussions with the Greater Halifax Economic Development Partnership.

He said "Call centres have been located in downtown Halifax and in the Highfield Park area of Dartmouth and are providing hundreds of jobs for people in these areas. I believe that Spryfield has all the amenities necessary for a call centre and the business community and I intend to pursue the opportunities. There is no reason why our area cannot be considered."

Councillor Adams suggests the South Centre Mall in Spryfield, on the Dentith Road, would be an excellent location for a large call centre operation.

"It has the space; it's located in the centre of the business community; it has easy access to all of the major road networks; and there are lots of individuals in the Spryfield and surrounding district who would be well-qualified to fill the positions," he said.

The Councillor says he has discussed the proposition with Allan MacDonald, Manager of the South Centre Mall. The mall owners fully support the effort.

Councillor Adams says there is an active business network in the Spryfield area, fully supported by residents of the area. Last fall, approximately 400 residents turned out on a Sunday to a " Spryfield Business Expo" to learn more about businesses and services available in their community and the need to support them as local consumers.
