This inspection is conducted to follow up on concerns some area residents have expressed regarding a sewer smell entering their dwellings. HRM has initiated the process to replace a section of the sanitary sewer system on Hines Road, south of the CN Rail tracks, to address some concerns related to corrosion and odour in the municipal sanitary sewer system.
During the test, residents may see smoke coming from building vents, roof drains, manholes or holes in the ground. The smoke is harmless, non-toxic, creates no fire hazard and will dissipate quickly. The smoke may enter buildings if the floor drain traps are dry, or depending upon the configuration of plumbing.
It is important for HRM to know where and why the smoke has entered affected buildings. Residents are urged to advise personnel from the smoke testing crew. Should you have any questions/concerns regarding this procedure, please contact Ms. Renée Roberge with HRM Environmental and Development Services at 490-6941.
