Public Meeting to Discuss Proposed Halfway House

(Monday, September 25/2000) -- Two Halifax area Councillors are hosting a public meeting this evening to seek citizen input regarding a proposed Corrections Canada halfway house at the corner of Windsor and Young Streets.

Councillors Sheila Fougere (District 14- Connaught/Quinpool) and Jerry Blumenthal (District 11-Halifax North End) organized the meeting, which will be held from 7 pm to 10 pm at the Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Center on Windsor Street.

Correctional Services staff will make a 15-minute information presentation regarding the proposed 36- bed community-based residential facility for parolees. The public will then have an opportunity to put questions regarding the proposed site, which is on lands of the former Willow Park complex.

Councillors Fougere and Blumenthal organized the meeting at the request of citizens who felt that the Open House concept of the previous information sessions could not adequately reflect the strength of community opposition to the proposed facility. The format of tonight's meeting will allow people to have the benefit of the facts first, and then be able to ask questions and provide feedback to Correctional Services.
