HRM Receives Four Bloom National Rating

(Thursday, October 5/2000)--At the recent 2000 National Awards Ceremonies in Edmonton for the "Communities in Bloom" competition, Halifax Regional Municipality was awarded a Four Bloom rating.

HRM competed as one of the five national finalists with Edmonton, Montreal, Laval and Winnipeg in the large city category.

The host city, Edmonton, was declared the overall category winner, receiving a Five Bloom designation. Ratings range from 1 to 4, with a Five Bloom awarded to the category winner.

Communities in Bloom is a national organization that provides an opportunity for Canadian municipalities to compete against each other in various population categories. Several hundred municipalities are now involved and must win at the provincial level before competing nationally.

Municipalities are evaluated by national judges on tidiness, environmental efforts, landscaping, floral displays, heritage presentation, urban forestry, landscaping and community involvement.

Halifax Regional Municipality has been involved with Communities in Bloom since its inception in 1995, competing over the years in the Capital Cities, Large Cities and Class of Excellence categories.

National recognitions for HRM have included community involvement, best public and private gardens, environmental awareness, park heritage presentation. This year, HRM won recognition for its waterfront development and public access efforts.

Canada's Communities in Bloom Program is now also linked to Britain in Bloom, Nations in Bloom and France en Fleur, allowing Canadian cities to compete with similar size cities from other countries.
