HRM Recruiting School Crossing Guards
(Thursday, October 26/2000)-- Halifax Regional Municipality is looking for persons who are interested in part-time employment and who would like to perform a valuable service to the community.
There are some vacancies in the School Crossing Guard Program and HRM is currently accepting applications from persons interested in this type of part-time work. There are currently positions available at sites in Halifax's South End, Fairview and the Bayers Road/Connaught Avenue area.
The municipality is also recruiting persons for the program's "Spare List." These persons would be required, at short notice, to fill in for Crossing Guards who call in ill or are unable to report to work for some other reason.
Successful recruits will be paid for three hours of work a day, Statutory holidays; all School Board professional development days, and storm days. The rate of pay is $6.50 an hour, for a minimum of three hours per day.
Some locations do not require School Crossing Guards to work a full, three hours daily; in the case of a few who may be required to work more than the three-hours a day, they will be compensated for the extra hours.
Persons applying for School Crossing Guard positions will be interviewed; will be subject to a security screening; and training will be provided to successful applicants.
David Towns, Program Manager for the School Crossing Guard Program, said " We are seeking are individuals who are reliable. This is the overriding criterion, because the children come to rely on having a crossing guard, and an unreliable one is worse than no guard at all."
