Citizens Invited to Meet Olympic Athletes

(Thursday, November 16/2000)-- Members of the public are invited to come along and meet some of Canada's Olympic athletes at a special ceremony on the Halifax waterfront this weekend.

The HRM Millennium Committee will host a special flag raising ceremony at Sackville Landing Plaza, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 18th in honour of the Halifax Regional Municipality's Olympic athletes.

Steve Giles, 2000 Olympic Bronze Medallist from Lake Echo, will represent the region's Olympic athletes during the ceremony. Giles, who just returned home from Australia, will speak during the ceremony of his experiences in Sydney.

"It is wonderful to be home," says Giles, "I have competed on behalf of Canada for over 12 years, and during every competition I am always proud to represent my country. Winning a medal for Canada during the Sydney Olympics was a dream come true."

Giles will be joined by Canadian Olympians: Julia Rivard (canoe/kayak), Trevor Marshall (coach: canoe/kayak), Wayne Gordon (coach: boxing), John MacPherson (para-athlete table tennis), and officials Frank Garner and Bruce Chaisson.

All Olympic athletes, coaches and officials will be available for interviews, autographs and photos following the ceremony.
