District 8 Councillor asks Royal Bank and Landlord- Sobeys to explain closure of Bank Branch to Woodside Customers
(Thursday, January 11, 2001) - HRM Councillor for District 8-Woodside, Bruce Hetherington, is requesting today for the Royal Bank of Canada and their landlord, Sobeys, to come forward and explain to the residents of Woodside the reasons for the Royal Bank's planned closure of its Woodside Branch after nearly forty years in the community. The Royal Bank has recently announced that it will close its doors for good in the Sobey's Woodside Shopping Center in early May, 2001, when the bank's current lease expires.
Councillor Hetherington said he" understands that Sobeys, the shopping center landlords, have only offered the Royal Bank a one year renewable lease in its present location." He adds "both organizations are letting the community of Woodside down. Many senior citizens and young couples reside in the community and they depend on being able to access banking services in their immediate area."
The Councillor stated, " I was always under the impression that banking was a service that is provided to customers for their convenience, but between Sobeys and the Royal Bank, this service is being taken away from the citizens and businesses of Woodside."
The intended closure of the Royal Bank Branch will have a real impact on Woodside and its residents , as it is the last remaining bank to operate a branch in the area.
