New Food Bank Result of Community Effort
(Wednesday, January 17/2001)-- District 3 Councillor Keith Colwell today commended the tremendous volunteer effort and community response to the establishment of a new food bank to cover the area from Porter's Lake to Musquodoboit Harbour.
Councillor Colwell (Preston/Porter's Lake) said that he has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of generosity from volunteers for the Marine Communities Food Bank Society, the local business community and many private individuals.
"Unfortunately, food banks are a reality of the times. I am proud that our community has responded in such a positive way to help those among us who are in need. The new food bank takes in a catchment area that wasn't easily served by the existing food banks at Lake Echo and Jeddore, " he said.
The new food bank will be located in a former school building, which was re-located to a lot adjacent to the Chezzetcook Volunteer Fire Station. Some of the materials to repair the building have been donated and there seems to be no shortage of volunteer labour.
The Marine Communities Food Bank Society will hold an information session and food drive on Monday, January 22nd, in the lobby of the Superstore at Porter's Lake. Volunteers will be collecting food and asking for cash donations at that time.
The official opening of the new food bank will take place on Thursday, January 25th, at the site at the rear of the Chezzetcook Volunteer Fire Station.
The Marine Communities Food Bank Society will be working closely with other food banks in the area, as well as the Metro Food Bank Society in Halifax.
Councillor Colwell extended congratulations to the many volunteers, community groups and local contributors who helped to make the new food bank at Chezzetcook a reality.
