Reward Offered in Tyrone Oliver Murder Case
(Tuesday, February 27/2001)-- For the first time in its history, Halifax Regional Municipality is offering a reward to the public for information regarding an unsolved murder case.
Mayor Peter Kelly announced today that HRM's Board of Police Commissioners is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of 20-year-old Tyrone Layton Oliver.
Mayor Kelly told a news conference at City Hall this morning "Halifax Regional Council and the Board of Police Commissioners have had lengthy discussions about the possibility of offering a reward in certain cases. We are now willing to see if rewards are a viable way to clear these types of cases for our police."
The reward will be offered from March 1 to March 31, 2001 only. Halifax Regional Police will make the determination if the HRM Board of Police Commissioners will award the reward money.
Tyrone Oliver was shot several times and found in a playground near the corner of Creighton and Gerrish Streets in Halifax on July 20, 2000, at approximately 11 p.m. He died the next morning in hospital.
Halifax Regional Police continue to investigate this homicide and have followed up several leads to date.
Mayor Kelly said the Board of Police Commissioners considered several factors before deciding which case may be used to try the reward effort. Police have good leads and valuable information that has already been gleaned from the community.
Other unsolved homicide cases within the HRM will be assessed by the Board over the next six months.
