Construction Begins on New Downtown Parking Garage
(Wednesday, June 20/2001)-- Mayor Peter Kelly declared the official start of construction today on the new $10.3 million municipal parking garage in downtown Halifax.
Sitting behind the controls of a huge rock-breaking machine, Mayor Kelly carried out the ceremonial ground-breaking during a brief ceremony on the site, attended by Members of Halifax Regional Council, HRM Senior Management, representatives of the downtown Halifax business community and others.
The parkade, which will provide parking for 570 vehicles and include 4,550 square feet of retail space, is being constructed on a parcel of municipally-owned land, bounded by Granville, Salter and Hollis Streets in downtown Halifax.
The new facility will be owned by HRM and construction costs will be recovered from operating revenues through a 25-year management contract between the Hardman Group Limited and the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Mayor Kelly said "We are very proud of this partnership with the Hardman Group, which has an excellent reputation as a developer and property manager in this area. I am confident that we will have a quality structure and the new facility will do much to help alleviate parking difficulties in downtown Halifax."
Bill Hardman, Chair of the Hardman Group said " We are pleased to be both the developers and managers of the new HRM municipal parkade. We anticipate that it will bring many benefits to the community, retailers and other businesses in downtown Halifax."
The project is scheduled to be completed in the Spring of 2002.
