New Signal System Puts Transit Buses Out in Front

(Tuesday, July 3/2001)- Halifax Regional Municipality wants to give transit riders the edge in heavy traffic.

It's hoping to greatly improve the ability of Halifax Transit buses to compete with car traffic through a new Transit Priority Program.

Mayor Peter Kelly will officially launch the program tomorrow (July 4th) by unveiling the municipality's first " Transit Priority Signal" at the corner of North and Brunswick Streets in Halifax.

The Transit Priority Signal is a white vertical bar, located above the red traffic signal. It comes on for a few seconds prior to the traffic light turning green. This allows transit buses to enter the intersection before other traffic, and gives transit that much- needed "jump" in heavy traffic.

Other Transit Priority Program measures will be put in place later this summer.

When: Wednesday, July 4, 2001

Time: 9 a.m.

Where: Intersection of North and Brunswick Streets, Halifax (near the ramps to the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge)
