Annual Shilling Ceremony Set for Thursday, July 5th

(Thursday, July 5/2001) --- The annual Shilling Ceremony for the lease of Point Pleasant Park will take place this afternoon, at 2:30 p.m., at Prince of Wales Tower National Historic Site of Canada.

Mayor Peter Kelly will present Chief Justice Constance Glube with the ceremonial shilling for the municipality's annual lease of the park from the Crown. The Chief Justice is representing Lieutenant-Governor Myra Freeman.

The original 999 year- lease was signed in 1873 between the Crown and the Directors of Point Pleasant Park. In 1997, the newly- created Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) became the legal successor to the Directors as the lessee.

Parks Canada's involvement with the 178-acre Point Pleasant Park is twofold: it administers leases on behalf of the federal government; and it operates Prince of Wales Tower National Historic Site of Canada within the Park.

(Directions: Enter Point Pleasant Park from Tower Road Parking Lot; proceed along road into Park (Cambridge Drive) for a short distance; Prince of Wales Tower will be on right side of road.)
