HRM Crews Trying to Free Wayward Harbour Seal

(Monday, July 9/2001)-- Parks and Open Spaces crews are working with Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials to free a harbour seal that made its way into the waters of Sullivan's Pond in Dartmouth over the weekend.

The works crews will use a boom truck to temporarily remove the bars and screening on the spillway from Sullivan's Pond, near the Cenotaph, to allow the wayward seal to leave the Pond and make its way into Halifax Harbour. However, it will be up to the seal to determine the time of its exit.

It is believed the seal may have been chasing schools of gaspereau fish in the Bay of Fundy and inadvertently made its way through the Shubenacadie Canal waterway, into Lake Banook and eventually crossing (crawling) the roadway and into Sullivan's Pond.
