Improper Materials Will Not Be Collected

(Friday, July 27, 2001)-- Solid Waste Resource officials are urging residents of Halifax Regional Municipality not to deposit materials, such as coffee cups, empty propane tanks, clothing, plastic materials of any type (including plastic bags) , or other non-organic materials in the green compost carts.

Residents are also requested to keep corrugated cardboard boxes, glass bottles , newspapers and metal cans out of their green carts. Only food, leaf and yard waste and soiled paper(e.g. paper towels) are to be placed in the green compost carts.

Jim Bauld, Diversion Planning Coordinator, said waste haulers will sticker and not empty green carts or blue bags which contain improper materials.

Mr. Bauld said " If you notice a brightly coloured sticker on your green cart or blue bag, and your materials are not collected, we ask for your assistance by removing any improper materials from the green cart or blue bag. Only positive actions by our citizens will ensure the continued success of recycling and composting in the HRM."

HRM's Neighbourhood Assistance Program was established to assist residents in the correct preparation of materials to be composted and recycled.

If residents have questions about what can, and cannot, go in green carts or blue bags, please refer to the HRM web site at www.halifax.ca/recycle ; page 13 of the Yellow Pages; the HRM Collection Calendar or call MetroInfo at 490-4000.
