HRM Competing for National Honours
(Friday, August 10/2001)-- Halifax Regional Municipality is one of the five national finalists in this year's large city category in the "Communities in Bloom" competition.
HRM is competing against Edmonton, Montreal, Laval and Winnipeg in the large city category.
Competing municipalities are evaluated by national judges, who will arrive in Halifax this Sunday (August 12th ). They will conduct their official review and tours on Monday and Tuesday ( August 13th -14th ), visiting a number of parks, gardens, heritage and related sites in the municipality.
The judges, including one from Belgium, will also view some commercial and private properties to get a flavour of the beautification, heritage conservation and environmental efforts being carried out by HRM and its citizens.
Part of the tour will showcase some of HRM's leading national environmentally sustainable initiatives, and extensive community and business park and environmental stewardship partnerships.
"Communities in Bloom" encourages and promotes improvement of quality of life through beautification, community involvement, environmental awareness, and heritage conservation. It was started in 1995 and has seen considerable growth over the past few years. HRM has been involved since its inception.
Canadian award winners will be announced at the National Awards Ceremonies to be held this year in Saint John, New Brunswick, September 21st and 22nd
