Sewer Upgrades Provide Greater Protection to MacIntosh Run
(Friday, August 17/2001)-- A new $1 million sanitary sewer upgrade project in Spryfield "fits in well" with the aims of the MacIntosh Run Clean-Up Committee and will help to protect the waterway from sewage overflows during heavy rainfalls, Councillor Stephen Adams said today.
The project was announced today as part of the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program. It provides for sanitary sewer upgrades along MacIntosh Run, from Herring Cove Road to Sussex Street; and along Catamaran Pond, from the Old Sambro Road to the Herring Cove Road. The federal, provincial and municipal governments will cost-share one-third each on the total project cost.
The District 18 (Spryfield/Herring Cove) Councillor said natural deterioration and leaks in the existing sanitary sewer lines in the area have reduced sewer capacity, increasing potential for sewer back-ups and overflow discharge into the MacIntosh Run.
"The is the first Infrastructure program for the Spryfield area that I can think of in recent memory. We are pleased that the sanitary sewer system will be upgraded to increase capacity. This will not only serve existing households on the system, but provide enough additional capacity for development of 200 new homes in the area, " he said.
Councillor Adams said he has been working with the MacIntosh Run Clean-Up Committee to minimize any potential pollution of the waterway, which will provide more opportunities for recreational use of the area by local residents and visitors.
"MacIntosh Run is a diamond in the rough and we have been working hard to have the area cleaned-up and protected against any future pollution. It offers tremendous potential for recreation use and we are committed to having it developed for that purpose, " he said.
Councillor Adams expressed thanks to Halifax West MP Geoff Regan, members of the MacIntosh Run Clean-Up Committee and HRM staff for working so hard with him to secure funding for the project under the Infrastructure Program.
