Mayor Kelly Invites HRM Citizens to Participate in Navy Send-Off
(Tuesday, October 16, 2001) - Mayor Peter Kelly extended an invitation today to the citizens of the Halifax Regional Municipality to gather along the Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts tomorrow afternoon ( Wednesday, October 17th) to send off Canada's naval contingent as they sail to join other Allied forces in the War on Terrorism.
Close to 900 military personnel are scheduled to sail from the naval dockyards in Halifax between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on three naval ships; the supply ship HMCS Preserver; the destroyer HMCS Iroquois and the frigate HMCS Charlottetown.
Mayor Kelly said, "While the official send-off ceremony at HMC Dockyard will be closed to the general public for security reasons, there is ample space along the Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts for citizens to gather and show their support for our Canadian military personnel, many of them who are metro area residents, as they sail from our harbour and join our city's namesake frigate, 'HMCS Halifax', already deployed."
The Mayor added, "Halifax has always had a very strong naval tradition, and it is the East Coast base for the Canadian Navy. I believe that the residents of our community will want to get out and show their support for the men and women of our Armed Forces, as they always have in times of conflict."
Mayor Kelly also urged members of the business community to allow some flexibility for those employees who wish to attend the naval send-off and permit them to leave work a little early so they can make their way to the waterfront area in time for the sail-past.
