HRM Regional Fire & Emergency Service to Distribute Compliance Notices to Property Owners

(Wednesday, April 10,2002)- Mayor Peter Kelly and the HRM Regional Fire & Emergency Service wish to advise Property Owners in the south end of peninsular Halifax, that the Fire Service will distribute compliance notices to property owners, beginning today, in a renewed fire prevention effort to combat the rash of recent fires in the south-end of Halifax. This step has been undertaken in an effort to have the residents assist the Fire Service by removing combustible materials from their properties to further reduce the possibility of a source of ignition for a fire to begin.

The Compliance Notices, in accordance with the Fire Prevention Act, Chapter 171 of the Revised Statutes of Nova Scotia 1989 (amended 1992), will request that owners comply with enforcement to require that property is kept clear of combustible materials and that regular municipal refuse collection is utilized.

The initial distribution area for the Compliance Notices will include the area starting at the intersection of Sackville and South Park Streets, proceeding easterly along Sackville Street to Brunswick Street, south along Brunswick to Spring Garden Road, east to Barrington Street, south along Barrington to Inglis Street, west to South Park Street and north along South Park Street , finishing up at the intersection of Sackville and South Park Streets.

HRM Residential Customers listed in the area above can dispose of all regular garbage, this coming Monday, April 15,2002. The normal bag limit has been lifted for this purpose to assist with the clean up.

Inquiries may be directed to the Fire Prevention Division at 490-5546.
