Upgraded Alderney Landing Plaza to Be Opened

(Tuesday, May 28/2002)-- Mayor Peter Kelly will officially open the recently-completed upgrade/renovations to the Alderney Landing Plaza during a brief ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday, May 29th) at 1 p.m.

The main goal of redesigning and revamping of this facility was to increase its attractiveness, improve public safety, and to enhance accessibility to the stairs and ramps.

With the Dartmouth Downtown Development Corporation's financial support, HRM Real Property Services selected a design team to work with the stakeholders group to address many problems of this aging structure.

The site received new finishes, lights, stairs and the ramp layout was redesigned to meet new Building Code requirements. Plants were introduced to soften the landscaping and to improve the overall appearance of the area.

Among those attending the ceremony will be:

Marion Currie- Executive Director Dartmouth Downtown Development Corporation
Kevin Murphy & Laughlin Rutt- Canadian Paraplegic Association
Cynthia Street - Architect and Accessibility Consultant
Bea MacGregor - Director- Alderney Landing
Mark Garnett - Project Engineer- O'Halloran Campbell Consultants
