(Friday, June 14, 2002, 3:30 pm.) Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service have advised of a serious fire burning this afternoon at the end of Downey Rd. in North Preston at a privately owned Construction and Demolition (C&D) Site. The fire, which broke out around noon-time today, is burning in a pie-shape formation approximately 400 feet wide on one side and 300 feet wide on the other side.
A N.S. Department of Natural Resources helicopter is on the scene and working to protect the tree line, about fifty yards away from where the fire is burning. HRM Fire & Emergency crews are working to contain the fire from the opposite direction.
No residences are currently threatened by the fire and it is hoped that it will be under control by this evening.
Any residents of the general vicinity may call the HRM Customer Call Centre at 490-4000 for further updates on the status of the fire.
