Leadership Workshop Planned for "Girls on the Move"

(August 19/2002)-- More than 100 girls and young women from throughout Halifax Regional Municipality will participate on a one-day workshop this Thursday entitled "Girls on the Move in HRM---Celebrating Your Spirit"

Participants, aged 12-15 years, were selected from various Parks and Recreation Services' leadership programs throughout HRM. They will be attending this event to further strengthen their skills and confidence as leaders.

The goal of "Celebrating Your Spirt" is to bring girls and young women with leadership potential together in an all-female gathering, in a safe and supportive environment, in the hopes of building stronger, more confident leaders.

It is hoped participants will gain a greater appreciation for the importance of physical activity and the many benefits it offers. The workshop will also give them a better sense of the importance of balancing the body, the mind and the spiritual elements of well being.

One major objective is to help equip participants with the skills and tools necessary to enable them to return home and to work as mentors to other younger girls in their own communities. This will be achieved by assisting their local area recreation programmer to implement their own "Girls On the Move" Team.

When: Thursday, August 22, 2002

Time: 9:30 am - 3:30 pm.

Where: Mount Saint Vincent University Campus (Mother House gymnasium, Rosaria Hall, playing field, fitness facilities, etc).
