Premier, Mayor Commit to Harbour Clean Up
(Tuesday, September 3/2002)-- Premier John Hamm and Mayor Peter Kelly spoke by telephone this morning to clarify the situation regarding funding of the Halifax Harbour clean up project.
Mayor Kelly said "Based on my conversation with the Premier, I am now convinced that the Province is committed to working with HRM to find the best way to provide its share of the funding needed. We now look forward to future actions that reflect the understandings presented today."
The Premier echoed the Mayor's comments "I appreciate the opportunity to clarify our position directly with Mayor Kelly. Halifax Harbour clean-up has always been a priority with our government. By working together, HRM and the Province will have the best opportunity to negotiate a significant Federal contribution."
Premier Hamm and Mayor Kelly have instructed their senior officials to negotiate the terms and parameters of such a cost-sharing agreement.
"I look forward to finalizing these funding arrangements, as the Province continues to negotiate federal funding for our dual objectives - Halifax Harbour clean up and highway improvements," added Premier Hamm.
The Premier and Mayor are scheduled to meet this Friday to discuss this and other issues.
