One Injured, Apartment Building Evacuated in Overnight Fire

(Monday, October 28/2002)-- Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service responded overnight to a fire at a three-storey, 10 unit building at 62 Jackson Road, Dartmouth. The initial call came in at 4 a.m. and the blaze was under control at 4:30 a.m.

Officials report that one person was taken to hospital (not life threatening injuries) and 20 others were evacuated from the building and taken to shelter by the Red Cross.

Fire officials say the fire was contained to one apartment. There was extensive damage to one bedroom and fire/smoke damage to the rest of the apartment. Also, there was some smoke and water damage to other parts of the building.

Officials say occupants of the building should be able to return to their apartments by the end of the day.

Investigators are on the scene investigating the cause.
